If you find your computer is running slow, the reasons could be many. Background programs running in your computer take up valuable memory making your PC run slow. The programs running in your computer take up not only the memory space, but also a part of your CPU time. The icons you find in your system tray are some of the programs which you have kept running. In order to bring back your computer to run normally, selectively stop these programs from running or delete them. When you boot your computer, some programs are automatically started. To optimize your computer, you need to stop these or delete them from “program start up” by using Start/Search function.

Your computer would run slow if you do not have much space left in your hard drive. You should have atleast 3 to 4 MB clear disk area in your hard disk so your computer runs at normal speed. If you have more than one drive, this applies to your “C” hard drive or the hard drive where your Windows operating system is installed. If you find the concerned drive is nearly full or does not have much space left, you should try and find out which are programs that could be deleted to make some free space available.

When you are connected to the internet, your windows and other software programs may start to get automatically updated at the background. Your computer will start to run slow untill the time the updating process is completed. Once completed, your computer should come back to its normal operation. If you want to stop this from happening, you need to disable all your automatic update sequences.

Your Windows operating system scans your hard drive to retrieve required data at the time it is executing assigned tasks. If data in your hard drive is fragmented, Windows takes longer to scan the hard disk in order to find that data. This makes your computer run slow. You need to regularly de-fragment your hard drive, so the data remains contiguous. By de-fragmenting the data in your hard drive, your Windows operating system takes less time to scan the hard drive to retrieve the required data.

If you regularly play games on your PC and find your computer is running slow, it could be that the RAM in your computer needs to be upgraded. Games require lots of RAM spaces to run, and you would need to upgrade your RAM suitably to run games software in your PC.

You must not have device drivers in your computer which are conflicting with each other. For example, if you have two different video drivers in your computer, your Windows operating system would not be able to decide which one to use. This would cause your computer to run slow. To run normally, you should remove one of the drivers from the system. When you open your “system” from the control panel, proceed to the “hardware” tab and then to “device manager”, you may find some of the conflicting device components marked in yellow with an exclamation mark. Either re-load the drivers for those devices, or remove them from your system if you find them of no use.

Virus infections and malicious software in your PC make your computer run slow. Your computer remains vulnerable when you are browsing the Internet. Even opening unknown attachments in your inbox may infect your system. You can protect your computer against viruses and malicious software by having the proper anti-virus and anti-spyware software running in your system when these vulnerabilities can be detected and removed. Malicious software creeps into your computer and installs itself without your knowledge and may start to gather personal information kept in your computer, sending it out to someone through the Internet.

Windows registry is a database where important data is stored by the Windows operating system. The registry in your computer starts to develop errors as you install and un-install programs from your computer. With these errors, the Windows registry grows larger occupying more and more space. Windows looks for essential data in the registry. This data is required by Windows to execute tasks. If your registry has grown large, Windows takes more time to scan the data than it requires and your computer slows down. To put your computer back in normal operating condition, you need registry cleaning software to remove the errors from your registry and optimize it as well.
