In this country, education has evolved from humble beginnings. In the early 1600’s education was a primarily religious experience where the goal was to teach early church doctrine. This was accepted largely because the majority of settlers were either puritan or Congregationalists. As people began to migrate from other beliefs and cultures, this became a problem. The argument for a centralized, government run school free from religious bias and free to all children would rage on for several decades.
It was thought at the time that education was something only needed by the upper classes. The economic activity of the colonies, as in most other places at the time was based on physical labor. Children would go to work at a very young age in order to help support their families, meaning that a lot of parents saw no need for intensive instruction in mathematics or philosophy - little emphasis was placed on any sort of education past the very early years.

“A true conservationist is a man who knows that the world is not given by his fathers, but borrowed from his children.” - Audubon
We can define conservation as managing natural resources in a planned manner. We can’t say that conservation is only about economics, there is a lot more to it than that. It also includes passing the beautiful nature to the coming generation and also about preserving the lives of creatures that would become extinct if care is not taken to protect them.

Many people felt that the need of education was primarily for the wealthy. The economy of the early years in this country was based mostly upon hard physical labor. All across the nation children at very young ages would be required to work in the fields or even factories to contribute to the family’s finances. In the mind of many people, there was little need for philosophy or correct English to plow a field. Therefore, little importance was placed on education beyond elementary school.
